After the European Championships last August in Crozet, Charlotte Fry competed for the first time last Saturday. For her return, the Van Olst rider had brought two young stallions to the Subtop competition in Velddriel and was in a class of her own with both. With the seven-year-old Nalegro (Painted Black x Negro, breeder: J.L. Hanse, Burgh-Haamstede), she won the Prix St. Georges with 72.279%, and the just six-year-old O’Frederic (For Romance x Fidertanz, breeder: Heike Schulte, Eggermühlen) scored 70.786% in his Subtop debut in the ZZ-Zwaar class. Charlotte has already competed in several Small Tour competitions with two-time World Championship horse (five- and six-year-olds) Nalegro, the last of which was in May of this year. “That was a while ago, and after that, we continued training at home to hopefully improve,” says Fry, who is very happy with her test today. “He did very well, and we didn’t have any major mistakes. The changes and pirouettes were especially beautiful. Nalegro has become stronger and better at his work; I’m really happy with him.”
After the young horse competitions, O’Frederic performed his first test in regular competition today. And the six-year-old stallion did very well. “He’s still a baby, but he has such an incredible character,” Fry praises the stallion with whom she received the Perfect Pair Prize, a prize for the combination with the most harmonious presentation, at last year’s KWPN Stallion Show.
“The ZZ-Zwaar level are quite challenging tests, but it was great to be able to take him to the same competition as Nalego. O’Frederic is very eager to work and is so honest in the arena. He makes my job so easy,” Fry continues with a laugh. “We had a few mistakes, but that’s okay. He did very well, a truly promising horse for the future. O’Frederic doesn’t get hot and is sharp in a good way; he gives a very good feeling.”
For Fry, this competition marked her return after the European Championships last August in Crozet, France, where she and Glamourdale were part of the silver-winning British team. “It was great to be back in the arena, and both horses did very well. And it was great that the training at home paid off.”
