Other Van Olst breeding products do well in sport as well

We recently wrote an article on this website about the home-bred horses of Van Olst Horses. But some horses that are now in the spotlight were not yet mentioned in this article.

Don Joe, the son of Diego out of the Lord Leatherdale x Almox Prints bred mare Cinderella, recently made his Grand Prix debut and scored 73% in his second appearance at this level! At 9 years old, he is still young for this level, but under the saddle of Charlotte Fry he is already making a very good impression.

The next horse is Niro’s Enjoy, a large dark brown son of the German foundation stallion De Niro, here combined with the mare Enjoy who descends from Lord Leatherdale x Negro. During the NAF Dressage Talent Berlicum he won the class for 4-year-old dressage horses with a total score of 189 points. Guest rider Marten Luiten gave him the ultimate 10!

Below is the article we previously published:

Van Olst Horses also breeds a few foals every year. Did you know that the mare Iris, who won the Prix St Georges class in Someren last weekend ridden by Anouk Ivits, was also bred by Van Olst Horses? This daughter of Lord Leatherdale is bred out of the Negro x Monaco mare Eternal Flame who is a full sister of Elegance. Under Beatriz Ferrer Salat, he took part in the Tokyo Olympics and the European Dressage Championships in Hagen last year.

Another full sister of Eternal Flame and Elegance is the Small Tour mare Doortje Subtilia.

The next full sister of these 3 horses is the mother of no less than three NRPS approved stallions: Evegro (by Everdale) is ready to compete in the Prix st. Georges and recently purchased by Lotje Schoots, Irvin (by Inspire) is the second son and the third son is Everest (by Especial). Everest recently passed his performance test with a very good score and previously won the KWPN Young Dressage Talents for three-year-olds in Oosteinde with a 10 for his canter. Everest will be available to breeders via fresh semen this year.

Nalegro descends from a completely different line. Nalegro is the Painted Black son who has just been approved by the KWPN with no less than 85 points. What is special about this stallion is that he was bred out of the full sister of the most successful dressage horse ever: Valegro. Olympic medals, medals at World Cups and European Championships and winner of the World Cup final. He has won everything there is to win under Charlotte Dujardin.

But it is not only dressage that is bred. Gertjan’s ‘old’ love, the breeding of jumping horses, is also being practiced. During the Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida, the class for 7 year olds was won by Kadansa B under Sabrina Lefebvre. Kadansa B was bred by Van Olst Horses and Thomas Bezouw out of the Carthino Z  x Animo mare Didansa. Didansa is a full sister of the Grand Prix show jumper Cigo B.

Niro’s Enjoy wins NAF Dressage Talent Berlicum 2022

After a year of absence due to the corona crisis, NAF Dressage Talent Berlicum was back on the calendar this year. A competition for 4 and 5 year old dressage horses and for the first time also ponies. The four-year-old class was won by Niro’s Enjoy (s. De Niro x Lord Leatherdale, breeder Van Olst Horses) ridden by Franka Loos with 189 points.

The mare Nareina (s. Everdale x Krack C, breeder: Mrs. Oudijk from Arkel) finished in fourth place, ridden by Charlotte Fry.

This year the judges were Vincent van Gasselt and Dominique Filion, who both achieved success in the international Grand Prix. Marten Luiten, reigning European Champion Young Riders, rode the highest-ranking horses. “This was really fun to do”, Dominique is satisfied. “Vincent and I were very much on the same page and the competition was set up very well and animal-friendly. There was a large group among the four-year-olds, but there was good riding and certainly the top ten consisted of really super nice horses. In the leading group you can’t really believe that those horses are only four years old. Marten got a great feeling on all the horses and wanted to give them all a 10. They are very different horses, but they are all very special in their own way. I am very excited that we have so many good young horses in the Netherlands.”

Kenzo s. Glamourdale to 80% in his ZZ-Licht debut!

80% is a score that is not often given in ZZ-Licht. Diederik van Silfhout succeeded this weekend with the powerhouse Kenzo.

Kenzo, s. Glamourdale x Flemmingh breeder G. Eggink from Lochem) was sold as a 2.5 year old stallion during the KWPN Select Sale to Esmee van Gijtenbeek. As a 3 year old he won the Gelderland Cup in Brummen and recently he was sold to Diederik van Silfhout.

A short piece of the test can be viewed on Facebook:

Lotje Schoots performs with “Van Olst” horses

Lotje Schoots has been riding the brown NRPS stallion Justin s. Johnson for Van Olst Horses for some time now. Two weeks ago, this duo made their competition debut in the ZZ-Licht with a score of 73%. Last weekend the championships of Utrecht were on the agenda where they again started. “Justin did a very nice and good first test. He is very stable and I was able to ride him very nicely through the test. I have quite a difficult freestyle but it suits him very well. He has a fantastic competition attitude and will always be there and go for it,” said the rider. “The Dutch National Championships will be in two weeks, after which the we will go to the subtop level.”

Also Evegro s. Everdale (bred by Van Olst Horses himself) recently purchased by Schoots also made his competition debut in ZZ-Licht. Despite the rough weather outside, with storms and rain, he managed a top score of 73%.

Charlotte Fry scores at subtop Den Dungen: “A lot of quality”

In the combined Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I class in Den Dungen, Charlotte Fry took home two prizes on Wednesday. The second place with Especial (by Everdale) and a fifth place with Jackson (by Everdale). The class was won by Chantal Nijpjes and her horse Golden Girl (by Uphill) with 71.47%. Third was Jessica Leijser who rode Kashmir (by Glamourdale) to 69.93%. Tom Verhoeven and Honey D’Or (by Chippendale) were fourth with 69.71%.

Spectacular trot

The second prize was for Charlotte’s Intermediaire I test, which was rewarded with 70.29% “Especial had a very good test. The entire part in trot was really a highlight, he went through it very nicely. At the start of the canter he got a little hot, but luckily I was able to calm him down a bit, after which he did very nice pirouettes.” says the rider.

Green

Charlotte’s Prix St. Georges test was good for 68.28%. “Jackson is still quite green and inexperienced. It was even his first ever show, so he thought it was all a bit exciting. He is a mega talented horse and there were really nice parts in the test.”

Grand Prix quality

“They are both offspring of Everdale and I really love his offspring. They have a fantastic mentality and the quality to become Grand Prix horses. This Saturday I will start again with Jackson in Nieuw en Sint Joosland. He has seen very little, so it is now important to gain a lot of experience. I want to take Especial a few times with me to international competitions in the Small Tour this season.”

80+ score for Everdale daughter in IBOP

And again an Everdale mare was tested in the IBOP who managed to achieve a score above 80 points. Kwinzie’s-Zymfony (Everdale x Krack C, breeder J.W.J.M. Janssen) owned by Y. Schrijnemaker was presented at the IBOP in Panningen and achieved 80.5 points with the following jury comments:

“The seven-year-old Everdale daughter particularly stood out in the trot with her good silhouette and use of the frontleg. The canter is light-footed and with good balance. She has a lot of suppleness in all three gaits and can be worked well.”

Inverness scores international

Inverness, the 9 year old son of Everdale (ds Johnson, bred by Y.M.M. van Maasacker, Cuijk) made his international Prix st. Georges debut at the show in Le Mans. Ridden by Brecht D’Hoore the scored 70,71% in a strong and competitive field which resulted in a 4th place.

Charlotte Fry is having a great day in Kronenberg

It was a busy and quite long day today for Charlotte Fry in Kronenberg, but the rider did not go home empty-handed. In the Grand Prix she won with Glamourdale (by Lord Leatherdale, breeder J.W. Rodenburg) with a super score of 78.153%. Lottie finished second with Don Joe (by Diego, breeder Van Olst Horses), who made his debut at this level, and in the other Big Tour class, the British rider rode Inclusive (by Everdale, breeder: R. Enting) in to a winning debut in the Intermediate II. “I’m very happy,” said the rider afterwards. “Glamourdale is better than ever and Don Joe and Inclusive have both also done very well for the first time in a new class.”

For Glamourdale, today was the first time he went along since Aachen and he was looking forward to it. “We have continued to work well at home and he has continued to develop very nicely and has also become stronger again,” says Fry.
The fact that he is not in a competition rhythm at the moment does not disturb Glamourdale at all and according to Lottie he was just happy that he was out to show again. “We had a lot of nice points today and the piaffe and the passage we even had 8.5s and nines,” continues Fry. “Glamourdale loves to compete. He loves to be in the spotlight and I feel in the ring that he enjoys it. He really shines.”

Very easy
Don Joe was the first of the three this morning and he scored 72.772% on his GP debut. “Two weeks ago, at his Inter II debut, he completed the test very easily and then we had almost 72% and today it went so well again,” says Fry. “I am so very happy with him. He always does his best even if he is still a bit green and he just needs to get a little routine in the test. He really has a lot of talent for the exercises like piaffe, passage and the pirouettes and I’m really looking forward to the future with him.”

Inclusive
For Inclusive it was the first time in the Intermédiaire II today. “It rained really hard when I had to start with Inclusive and that made a lot of noise in the hall. He was a bit nervous because of that and that caused some tension,” explains Fry. “What I am very happy about is that he did well in the difficult exercises such as the piaffe and the passage, the pirouettes and the single changes, even though he found it exciting.”

Dutch debut
This was the first competition on Dutch soil for New Zealand rider Melissa Galloway. At the beginning of November, she and her two horses came to Van Olst Horses to train and work here. With Joey she managed to score more than 70% and finished in a nice 5th place.

Also in the ZZ-Zwaar and the Small Tour there were combinations with scores of more than seventy percent. Set Boschman received more than 72% from one of the judges for his test with I am Sam RS2 (by Everdale, breeder K. Retera), total score 70 percent in total. In the Inter I, Anouk Ivits and Iris (by Lord Leatherdale, breeder Van Olst Horses) were head and shoulders above the rest with 73.088% and in the ZZ-Zwaar Marieke van der Putten and Kuvasz RS2 (by Glamourdale, breeder Dekstation De Havikerwaard ) a score of 71.214%.

Bustique awarded “Keur”!

On the second day of the KWPN Stallion Show in Ermelo, the Indoctro son Bustique received a well-deserved recognition, the “keur” predicate. The striking breeding stallion from Stal Hendrix has been making good progress in breeding for many years and produced, among others, the Olympic medalist Beauville Z ridden by Maikel van der Vleuten. In order to be of service to international breeders, Bustique will be available next year via the EU station of  Van Olst Horses.

The Indoctro son Bustique (ds.Grannus), bred by Hans Schipper and Henk van de Wijngaart, was approved by the KWPN as a three-year-old and subsequently progressed to international 1.45/1.50m level under Michel Hendrix. In the first few years Bustique was stationed with Gertjan van Olst and dozens of international showjumpers immediately emerged from that breeding period.

Top 35 WBFSH
The ultimate example of this is, of course, the Grand Prix and World Cup winner Beauville Z, bred from his first crop, with whom Maikel van der Vleuten wrote history in 2021 by winning the individual bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Bustique also distinguishes itself with offspring such as Florida Balia NL, Hendrick’s HX, Berdien, Footlose HX and Golia. Time and time again the Indoctro son proves to give real winners. Despite his relatively young offspring, Bustique is already in 34th place in the WBFSH sire ranking and many top riders have now welcomed Bustique offspring into their stables. Paul Hendrix: “Bustique is an incredible inheritance and follows in the footsteps of his influential father Indoctro. We have waited a long time for it, but are happy that he has now received the recognition he deserves from the KWPN. If you look at the figures, it quickly becomes clear what kind of top progenitor Bustique is.”

European breeders
The stallion from Stal Hendrix will return to the stud farm this season where he started his breeding career. “Partly thanks to Gertjan van Olst, Bustique was able to make a strong start as a breeding stallion, so many good offspring were born among his clientele. Moreover, thanks to the EU recognition of Gertjan’s stud farm, we have the opportunity to offer Bustique together to an even wider breeding audience, as they can ship Bustique’s semen throughout Europe. For us there is nothing more beautiful than that he goes back to the place where his success started and we are pleased to resume the collaboration with Gertjan. Especially because he fully shares our enthusiasm about this brand new keur stallion.”
